SMTP Authentication Set Up


OS 10.3 (Panther) Setup

NOTE: These screenshots are based on OS 10.3. Not all versions of OS X will match these screenshots. If your system looks different, and you are unable to follow these instructions, please contact the Help Desk.

Select System Preferences from the Apple Menu in the upper left-hand corner.

Click the Network icon.

Location should be set to Automatic.

Show: should be set to Internal Modem.

Type CHAPEL in the Service Provider box.

Type your username in the Account Name: box.

Type your password in the Password: box.

Type 8596265784 (or whatever number the Tech has assigned you) in the Telephone Number box. If you have call waiting, type *70, 859 626 5784.

Put a check in the Save Password box.

Click the PPP Options button.


The following should be checked:
  • Redial if busy
  • Send PPP echo packets
  • Use TCP header compression

    The following may or may not be checked, depending on personal preference:

  • Connect automatically when needed
  • Prompt every 30 minutes to maintain connection
  • Disconnect if idle for 10 minutes
  • Disconnect when user logs out

    Everything else should be unchecked.

    Click OK.

    Click on the TCP_IP tab.
    Configure IPv4: should be set to Using PPP.

    In the DNS Servers field type 209.161.98.31 and then press Enter. Then type 209.161.98.32.

    In the Search Domains field, type CHPL.NET.


    Click on the Modem tab.

    Make sure the modem you are using is listed in the Modem box. If it isn't, click the arrows to the right of the box and select your modem.

    Note: Your modem may be different than the one displayed.

    Make sure there is a check next to Show modem status in menu bar.

    Click Apply Now.

    Close the Network window.

    You are now ready to test the connection.


    To connect to the Internet, click on the telephone icon in the upper right-hand corner of the desktop.

    Click Open Internet Connect.

    A connection window will appear.

    Click Connect.

    You will see the status window; close it by clicking the red X in the upper left-hand corner.

    You are now connected to your CHAPEL.NET account.
